What does salt air do to sliding doors and hardware?

Salt air corrodes the parts you cannot see first: rollers pit and seize until a slider grinds instead of gliding, track surfaces roughen, standard stainless and plated finishes spot and flake, and the salts work into seals until insulated glass units fog. On an oceanfront home the maintenance answer is regular cleaning of tracks and hardware, and the specification answer is marine-grade components from the start. When rollers and seals are already gone, we replace them with coastal-spec parts rather than like-for-like.

What hardware finish should oceanfront glass use?

For true oceanfront exposure, 316 stainless steel is the standard we recommend — it carries molybdenum specifically for chloride resistance, where standard 304 stainless will tea-stain and pit. Powder-coated and anodized finishes rated for marine environments are the other sound options. The right call depends on how direct the exposure is; a home on the sand and a home up the hill in Malibu Park do not need the same spec, and we will tell you which one you are.

Can glass railings handle Malibu wind?
